Fingal heritage events included a fun-cycle along Strawberry Beds Road organised by the Strawberry Beds Residents Association, guided tours of Leixlip Water Treatment Plant run by the Council’s Water Services Department, free entry to Lusk Heritage Centre with Lusk Heritage Group and the OPW, and several special events in Malahide Castle, Ardgillan Castle and Skerries Mills, with the Council’s Parks Division. Events were organised by a number of local heritage groups and by different Departments of Fingal County Council. There was a full programme of events in Fingal which included twenty talks, walks and other events to suit all the family. This year Heritage Week ran from Saturday 25th August to Sunday 2nd September. For more information please contact Heritage Week in Fingal Heritage Week is about fostering an increased awareness of our rich national and local heritage, thereby encouraging us to care for it and to enjoy it. The criteria considered by the judges include the following: ■ Work completed by the local authority to raise public awareness in the media ■ Work completed in promoting water safety in schools ■ A new or novel initiative or special event used to promote water safety ■ Improved provision of lifesaving equipment ■ Improved maintenance of lifesaving equipment ■ Increase and improvement in lifeguard services including increased lifeguard cover ■ Increased signage in particular of dangerous bathing areas ■ Provision of bye-laws to improve water safety ■ Donation or assistance given to local voluntary community search & rescue services ■ Improvement of facilities in bathing areas Water safety continues to be a top priority for Fingal County Council. The award is presented by Irish Water Safety to the local authority it considers has done most to promote water safety on the island of Ireland between September 2005 and September 2006. Once the infection is eliminated we intend to replace the trees with species resistant to the disease. Fingal County Council must remove and destroy all affected trees recently identified in public areas in the county. The Plant Protection Unit of the Department of Agriculture must be notified at or if Fireblight is found.

If the disease established in Ireland it would be catastrophic as every hedgerow in the country includes hawthorn. Fireblight Infection on Trees in Fingal Fireblight is a serious infective disease of plants, specific to the Roseceae family which includes hawthorn, rowan/mountain ash and whitebeam.
