She asks a person to say the name of another and, after sliding her hands together, the speaker drops dead. I have no word to describe Makima’s power except for insane. It’s become very clear that this is a well-kept secret that Fujimoto’s let us in on, and he definitely made it worth the wait. Anticipation only kept building when I learned that everyone needed to be blindfolded because only the most elite devil hunters can know which devils Makima has contracts with. I had no idea what to expect when she told Kurose and Tendo that she needed 30 inmates with at least a life sentence and a shrine at a high altitude. This intrigue about Makima’s abilities made me excited for the next couple of chapters. They’re all crumbled on the floor in a pile, gaping holes in their midsections as they rot in a pool of blood. The devil hunters meeting her, Kurose and Tendo, are stunned by this, but what I find more surprising is the state of the shooters inside the train. She gets off the train at Kyoto, the only sign of harm being the blood on her clothes, and claims that she wasn’t hit by the gunfire. But when we return to this scene in chapter 26, she’s up and moving again within moments. The last time we saw her was in volume three, when she and her bodyguards were all shot in the head. The best example of this is how Fujimoto’s revealing more information about Makima while still keeping her deepest secrets and motives hidden.

And Fujimoto is developing his characters without completely removing the mysteries that made them initially interesting. There’s confirmation that there are other people like Denji, who are somewhere between human and devil. The Gun Devil, the villain set up to be the biggest obstacle of the series, is making moves again after years of silence. Tatsuki Fujimoto has created a pretty stable base for his work in the last three volumes, and now all of that set-up is coming to a boil. With the series now being completed in Japan, and therefore knowing how many volumes I have to look forward to, I know I’m approaching the halfway point. I don’t know how each volume of Chainsaw Man manages to outdo the last one.
